Fall B Starts tomorrow - Where did fall break go?

OK, I had so many plans for fall break, including: clean my apartment, finish some things for extracurriculars, do laundry, and get a jump-start on reading for classes.

Well..., it's a little past midnight and I'm just getting to my marketing reading for tomorrow. I've done about half of my laundry (so I have something to wear tomorrow), and cleaned the kitchen and part of my front room. I don't know exactly what happened to Fall Break (i mean "MBA Forums and Professional Development Week"). I didn't go to West Coast Forum (the Marketing Symposium is a much better use of my time considering what I want to get into), so I decided to lay low. Unfortunately, times of super high stress tend to make me a little sick afterwards, and i found myself fighting a cold for a big chunk of it. I did find the time to hang out, grab some drinks with others here, catch a movie, and go to some Halloween parties.

Now that Fall B is upon us, it's also time to really start cracking on the recruiting thing. And for a lot of first years, that means mock interview season. It's a little intimidating to think that you're "mock" interviewing with real companies, but it's a really good service. You just have to realize that even though it's not technically a "real" interview, you do want to make a good impression on the company. And it's probably a good idea to get my 30-second speech tight for the symposium. Mine started out being more jumbled and a lot longer, so I've been working to get it to where it needs to be.

It's also time for me to start getting more involved with extracurriculars. I'm already involved in a couple, but I feel like getting more involved in the ones I'm doing. I'm learning that you get more out of the MBA experience if you stretch yourself, so that's what I'm going to do. After all, I didn't move from sunny California to cloudy Michigan to still remain in my comfort zone. I started thinking of the developmental goals that i had going into B-school -- one of them is to more confidently and aggressively approach a new task (I tend to be very reserved and "observant" during the beginning stages of a project). I wind up doing well once I start to feel like I know what I'm talking about, but my initial reluctance to jump "head first" into a brand new project has caused me problems in the past (and I've gotten that feedback before). I KNOW there will definitely be situations where I need to just jump into a project w/o knowing everthing right away. So by getting more deeply involved in something, I'll hopefully push myself to feel more comfortable in brand new situations. I also need to really get used to juggling multiple projects and work hard - basically wake up the skills that have gone dormant during my last year of pre-B-school work. There are some activities I have in mind, so we'll see how that goes...

Oh, and in case you were wondering -- today was a beautiful day! The sun was out, i saw blue sky ALL DAY, and i was so excited! Unfortunately, it's 26 degrees right now...It's supposed to be warmer tomorrow (Monday), but still...Good thing I got some warm gear recently (hat, gloves, scarf, etc). I am still deciding on a coat and boots.

OK, back to reading now!

SC Lost?!?

Wow. Just wow.

http://sports-ak.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=263010204

Hats off to Oregon State. I thought Oregon or Cal would be the one to beat USC. Now I'm wondering who the winner of the Mich/OSU game will play in the national championship? It certainly won't be Cal. I think Cal is going to the Rosebowl.

I'm just glad that this game was shown on TV.

Pics of the Big House

Since I woke up at 11:45, and it's raining, windy, and today's game doesn't seem that exciting to me (Northwestern), I've decided to watch us crush Northwestern on TV. Lucky for us, they're probably still mentally drained from giving up that big lead against mich. state last week (biggest comeback in college football history). I'm also likely not going to the next home game due to a conflict (and who exactly is Ball State?) so I think my Fall 2006 days in the Big House are over.

I was selective in which football games to attend, so I chose to attend conference and important games (Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa). We didn't have the cool games at home this year, so I'm excited for Fall 2007 season tickets (Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State are all home next season).

That said, I thought I'd post some pics of the Big House so you could see what it's like to have 110,000 fans at a game. I didn't post pics of "the bus" since they're all pictures of friends/classmates (and me) and I'm not sure they want to be featured on this blog. Especially drunk friends at 10am.

I'm having fun watching the game on TV. And I realize -- we ARE loud. I can clearly hear our cheers - even my favorite "YOU SUCK!" cheer. No wonder people are intimidated when they have to play in the Big House. I'm trying to decide if i want to make it to post-game "bus"/UMBSA tailgate (which has moved to the bus due to weather). I'm not sure i feel like going. I'm so warm and dry. And everyone in the stands looks so cold and uncomfortable.

Wisconsin Game (9/23)

(these pics don't feel like uploading to blogger. I'll update later.)

Michigan State Game (10/7)

Fall A is DONE!

Done! Woo hoo! No more finals! My mind is mush after reading/writing/analyzing a case for that long...Let me tell you, 4 hours of the final + 2 hours of pre-reading go by FAST!

I should have eaten something before the exam though...

Econ was hard!

Bad news: that was HARD - especially the multiple choice. Man - it was possible to spend A LOT of time on those.

Good news: the short-answer weren't so bad (some were even easy). And I think I did fine on the final exam. Not well enough to put me in the "excellent" range, but definitely well enough so I'm far from the low pass range.

Even better news: the only final left is strategy. And I'm not going to go crazy studying for that. I'm soo glad that I made it through most of finals - I even made it to the Thursday happy hour. It was good to take a break from all of this finals studying.

One more to go! I just wish the strategy final weren't 6 hours though...(2 hours to read the case, and 4 to answer the quesions)...

Praying to the gods of the low pass

OK, accounting sucked. Let's hope I somehow did well enough on that one to pull a low pass out of that class. I'm just not good at accounting. I felt MUCH better after stats. (Which, ironically was the class I was least worried about.)

OK, econ study time!

One down, 3 to go...

Aah! It's finals week! Stats was this afternoon, and I think it went OK. I finished (apparently A LOT of people didn't finish)...Anyway, it's done, and now I have to somehow hope that I learn how to do accounting. Oh dear...

Does winter really come in October?

We've had incredibly beautiful weather lately - bright and sunny, no rain for a while, not a cloud in the sky, not too hot, not too cold. Well, I heard the word "snow" on the news and almost threw something at my TV. Then I went to the weather channel...

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy, 61/47
Wednesday: Rain/thunder, 60/34
Thursday: Rain/snow, showers/wind, 40/26
Friday: Mostly cloudy/wind, 44/27

WTF? Snow in the forecast? It's freaking October for Christs sake! We haven't even gotten to fall break! I haven't bought my winter gear (since I thought I'd have time during fall break to do so). Aah! The good news is that the snow will likely not stick since the ground is too warm, but it still sucks. Note to self: pray to driving gods.

Fall A is almost done..

So I was sitting in class today, wondering how the standard deviation of the econ midterm can be so high, and then it dawned on me -- there's only one more week of class. Two weeks from tomorrow is my last final. Huh? how did that happen? I was finally starting to enjoy and understand econ (and stopped understanding stats - damned regression analyses). Now Fall A is almost done? Time really does fly!

So, as of now, I'm doing well in stats (which means nothing since 80% of the class grade is the final), not sure how I'm doing in strategy (I'd say about average), doing fine in econ (not super well, but within a standard deviation of the mean), and not well in accounting. I'm notorious for struggling during the term and pulling it together for the final, so I'm just glad that 1 - the Michigan State game doesn't start until 4:30, 2 - next week's game (weekend before finals) - is away. I mean, I definitely am gonna be hitting the books, but I need some sort of a release. football is the perfect fix. Ha ha.

Now to go drinkin'. (It's been a rough week...)
